A member has enquired as follows:
I have 4 Beal Minster 3 pass wet back steam raising boilers (16 barg nominal). Efficiency is checked weekly using a Lancom 111 Flue Gas analyser which shows 79 - 82% efficiency regularly. I also have 2 boilers fitted with Hamworthy Envirojet Low Nox dual fuel burners. Primary fuel is gas. We have been approached by a company to fit magnets to the gas inlets to each boiler claiming that efficiency will be incresed. Can anyone advise on this claim and is it realistic that efficiency can be improved significantly as it is believed that it is at an optimum already. |

Big Dave
When working as a service Engineer for Associated Heat services long ago, we were managing a district heating scheme for a local authority. The boilers were Natural Gas Fired. We fitted one boiler with magnets which were claimed to aline the gas molecules in such a way as to enable better combustion.
No two boilers behave alike, you can have as many boilers as you like in a boilerhouse and each will have characteristics of their own!, the test boiler was run 1 month with & 1 month without magnets.
No appreciable increase in performance or efficiencies was noted over the twelve months. This is not to say that modern equipment does not so, but I remain sceptical.
